Michael comes from an Edinburgh family of visual artists. He studied visual communication at Edinburgh College of Art and theatre design at Wimbledon School of Art and also dance at the Theatre School, Edinburgh, and the Central School of Ballet, London. His dancing career spanned ballet, cotemporary dance, Cossack, and flamenco. He danced in Scottish Ballet and with Scottish Opera, the Royal Opera Covent Garden, and English National Opera.

After a fun and rewarding career in the performing arts, Michael cheerfully hung up his dance shoes at the end of 2004 after an extensive tour with Tabula Rasa Dance Company.

Michael is a well-known dance teacher in Edinburgh. Now, as director of TalkingDance, he continues to regularly teach his popular and fun dance classes for young children - see dance. He also currently writes for Dance Expression magazine - also, see dance.
